The Age Old Debate: Children and Technology

There are many things for parents to worry about, and technology is definitely high up on that list. It seems like the papers comment every day on issues of children using computers, some with spectacular tales of success and others with stories of stunted development. As Christmas draws near, the age-old argument is bound to raise its head as technological toys are promoted for ever younger children. The latest in a flurry of toys is the Vtech InnoTab, a child’s tablet computer.
The tablet for use by three to nine year olds is specifically designed to educate children, with games and learning programmes. The toy has been predicted to be one of the most popular Christmas toys off the back of the success of the iPad. Many children were so intrigued by their parents’ new gadget that toy companies decided to launch their own versions.

The Vtech InnoTab comes with preloaded strategy games, ebooks, art studio, piano, video player, photo viewer and more.  The tablet also includes microphone, stylus pen, adaptor jack, earphone jack, SD card slot, USB port and carry pouch.
Many advocates of technology for children believe that devices like the Vtech InnoTab improve hand-eye coordination and prepare children for the world’s reliance on technology. Devices like this also aid children’s learning and development. The games also make learning fun and most children are happy to play with the tablet, even though it is designed to educate. Many people believe that computers are a great way for children to learn, as it makes the process fun and enjoyable.

Others believe that there are many other negative aspects to the use of technology, believing that children learn to rely on the devices for problem solving and therefore do not develop as well as children who use technology less often.
As ever with this debate the answer is always that the use of these devices is fine, as long as it is in moderation. Children should develop in a rounded way, so make sure that they don’t spend too long on the computer. Instead use the technology to educate and help your child learn how to use something that is in use all around us.
