Swine Flu Postpones Mexico City Show At Children’s Festival

From the Edmonton Journal:

Organizers of the International Children’s Festival have cancelled a show based out of Mexico City in response to global concerns about the spread of the H1N1 flu virus.

“After taking into account reports and recommendations from the World Health Organization and our local health authorities as well, we decided to err on the side of caution and just postpone the show,” festival director Nancy Abrahamson said on Wednesday.

Marionetas de la Esquina, which performs the show Emilio and the Enchanted Cow, will be replaced with additional shows by Canadian children’s performer Al Simmons. The cancelled show has been rebooked for the 2011 festival.

“While it’s unfortunate children will have to wait until 2011 to see Emilio and the Enchanted Cow, we’re thrilled to have the opportunity to extend Al Simmons’ run at this year’s festival. Al is a festival favourite who has earned a reputation as one of Canada’s most beloved and inventive children’s performers,” Abrahamson said.

People holding pre-paid tickets for Emilio and the Enchanted Cow will be contacted and told of the cancellation.

They can opt instead to buy tickets to Simmons’s show.

Meanwhile, the province reported eight new cases of the H1N1 flu Wednesday, bringing the provincial total to 61 cases.

All of the new patients — four adults and four children from across Alberta — have mild symptoms, and their travel histories have yet to be determined.

Alberta has had only two serious cases of the flu in Canada. A 39-year-old woman from the Gift Lake Métis Settlement died in hospital after catching the virus from unknown sources.

The investigation continues to determine if the flu caused her death, the only one in Canada since the outbreak began, and what part the woman’s asthma and diabetes may have played.

A girl is still recovering in an Edmonton-area hospital, but is still not well enough to be discharged.

There have been a total of 358 cases of the flu in Canada.
