Children’s Book Review: Canada in Colours

One word : gorgeous. The pictures in this book area amazing, and the bold colors and simple characters immediately engage the toddler set that it is aimed towards. As a Canadian too, I adore that the book reflects our county, the characters are cartoon moose, bears, a raccoon, and of course a beaver. There are very few words, but each page chooses a color and then has a simple paragraph about it, for example:

“Green spruce trees whisper in the woods.” and there is a beautiful drawing of the forest, with a couple of the animals camping out.

I wouldn’t hesitate to gift this book (and I just might!) to a toddler, I love books that reflect the country one lives in, and it doesn’t hurt to start young.

Reading level:Ages: 2 to 4, Toddler to Pre-K

Page Count: 24 pages

Publisher: Kids Can Press

What to expect: simple drawings, nothing scary for the age range.

Publisher’s synopsis:  Popular artist Per-Henrik Gürth showcases Canada’s diverse landscapes in his third Canadian-themed concept book for the young. As in the earlier bestsellers ABC of Canada and Canada 123, the book encompasses all major regions of Canada. This time, Per-Henrik takes children on a countrywide exploration in brilliant color. The distinctly Canadian images — white snow, green spruce, red PEI dunes, blue St. Lawrence River, yellow wheat fields — will delight Canadians and tourists alike. Multi-colored northern lights are the perfect end to this eye-pleasing journey.

The bold, bright art and simple text give pre-readers a valuable introduction to color — and to their beautiful country.
