Children’s Book Review: Carl’s Sleepy Afternoon

Ivy received this as a birthday present in January and as is typical of Alexandra Day’s work, is  beautifully done. Carl is a big adorable Rottweiler who goes on adventures when his family is gone. Only little Madeleine sees what Carl is up to, as he follows them through town, helps out the townsfolk, sneaks some cookies at the bakery, and saves puppies from a fire! Carl is quite well-known and well-loved by all the townsfolk as well as my own children. The illustrations are incredibly well done in a style I would compare to Norman Rockwell, that slightly old-fashioned feel to them but with great detail and color.

There is a whole line of Carl books, spanning more than a decade of works by Alexandra Day. Carl’s Snowy Afternoon is due out this November, and I am sure we will be pre-ordering it for a certain little girls birthday in January.
