Super Fruit: Cherries

One of the best things about summertime is all the in-season fruit that is available to us, and our family looks forward to eating as many cherries as we possibly can during the summer. We just bought our first bag a while ago and it was gone within a day between all 4 of us snacking. My 3 year old daughter is so proud that she has mastered taking the pit out, with only swallowing one so far. She was very anxious to inform me of that one pit she swallowed, very proud that it was only one, and then, of course, that whole talk of what goes in…must come out…

Health Benefits of Cherry: Cherry can reduce the pain of arthritis, gout and headaches. Cherry contains anthocyanin, a red pigment, which acts as an antioxidant. The plant pigment along with vitamin C strengthens collagen. Cherry juice contains melatonin, which is important for the function of the immune system.

Cherries are used as a sedative in nausea and vomiting. Wild cherry bark is an important cough remedy. Cherry is also beneficial in treating bronchitis, asthma and chronic diarrhea. It has been found that cherries can reduce the risk of heart attack and the risk of cancer by fifty percent.
