Three toys made by the company Melissa and Doug have been recalled due to unacceptable levels of barium found in the paint. I personally found this recall very disturbing as I was considering the cookie set as a Christmas gift for a couple of little girls that I know, because not only is the set absolutely adorable, but I should be able to place my trust in the company that they were safe! In the past, Melissa and Doug toys have been my good ol’ reliable gift because of their claims that they are a more green,that they worked hard to make sure standards were being met in their overseas factories and even on one product, baby shakers, had a guarantee that the wood was not toxic. Three products after the recall of two others in the summer of 2008 has me feeling a little queasy about gifting said wooden shakers, which end up being teethers, of course, to babies.
This is really, really disappointing.
The three toys that are being recalled are:
- Slice and Bake Cookie Set: The set includes a tube of 12 sliceable wooden cookies with 12 decorative toppings, a kitchen mitt, a wooden cookie sheet, knife and spatula. The recalled sets can be identified by UPC 000772040747. Health Canada tested batch number ZP1208.
- Shape Sorting Cube: This toy is a wooden cube with a lid and 12 colourful cut-out shapes that fit into 12 holes, based on the shape. The cut-out shapes are red, yellow, green, and blue. The recalled toys can be identified by UPC 000772005753. Health Canada tested batch number XY0309.
- Pound-a-Peg: This toy includes 8 colourful wooden pegs, a wooden hammer, and a wooden bench. The pegs are red, green, yellow, and blue, and can be pounded into the wooden bench using the hammer. The recalled toys can be identified by UPC 000772004961. Health Canada tested batch number ZP0609.
