Love New York or hate its guts, but the city does offer every service under the sun, and when it comes to kids, new yorkers will drown you in the sea of choices. My personal pick for today and incidentally – the winner of NY mag’s “best music class” category is Songs for Seeds – a class taught in a play space called “Apple Seeds” based in New York’s busy Manhattan.
Don’t get me wrong, I’m not advertising. The idea of this class, however, made me jump. I so wish I had access to something as remotely cool as this when I was little! Perhaps then I wouldn’t be stuck with my Guitar Hero and would be touring the country with a real band by now.
The basic thought behind the class is that children don’t necessarily need toys, cartoon characters or animal costumes to learn the language of music, and what is offered to them instead is a live band that plays songs written by a guy who used to jam with Bruce Springsteen and Meatloaf. The kids (anyone from age 2 and up is admitted) are encouraged to sing and play instruments along with the band, as well as dance and move. The children are also introduced to music and instruments from various countries of the world on a weekly basis.
