Children’s Book Review: Sharkpedia

Teeth. Big teeth. Sharp, shiny, big white teeth, dorsal fins that elicit instant terror from swimmers and surfers alike, and sleek gray killer bodies that have inspired movies beyond count.

We love to be scared of them: Sharks!

And these real life sea monsters thrill and fascinate kids to no end, so a book full of sharks and related tales is a huge thumbs up!

Sharkpedia is, as expected, full of amazing photos of sharks, in and out of their natural habitats.  Starting with the cover, which features a shark with its mouth cut out so children can feel it’s jagged teeth, you are inextricably drawn into the underwater world of sharks.  Folklore and fiction, attacks and maps, everything you could possibly want to know about sharks is in this book.

Adding to the reading experience is a fold out poster tucked in the back of the book, one side a photo of an awesomely fierce shark bursting out of the water, teeth glistening, and the other side a map of puzzles for your child to figure out. And the best part is, once the child has figured out the puzzles the answers will lead them to an online shark haven.

And yes, I cracked the code and went to the online shark haven, which is pretty cool and I won’t let out the secret, but it’s a fun and exciting addition to the book.
