It delights me to no end, the books I receive from smaller, less known authors thanks to this website. The books that otherwise I might not happen across, but now am able to share with my children.

The Lady of the Cat is exactly such a book, published by a small press in Owen Sound, Ontario Canada. The author, Brian Barrie, is a lawyer who has told the story to his children for years, then found a very talented illustrator to help bring his story to life.

The book is an amazing journey back in time, to the days when legends were born and the time of people who lived in caves. The tale is about how light burst forth from the darkness, the Northern Lights, to be exact.

The story is one of kindness, of hardships and family and of love. The illustrations are amazing, everything is pictured by the light of a small fire which must have presented a challenge to the illustrator, but still we get a sense of not only the darkness, but the beauty that still existed.

The Lady of the Cat is a unique and moving story that will be enjoyed by both parent and child and is one that shouldn’t be missed.
