Fourth Case of H1N1 at Children’s Hospital

Another case of H1N1 has been confirmed at the Calgary Children’s Hospital following a small outbreak there. I know that they are doing everything possible to contain it, but honestly, any person with a brain can do multiplication, and figure out how many times this health care worker came into contact with others, and then multiply how many times those people visited someone else’s air space….and you see why a pandemic happens so easily and so fast. What worries me is that generally, most people who are at the hospital have compromised health as it is, and the thought of the virus tearing through there makes me shudder, especially at the Children’s Hospital. Its another unknown staff member, so once again, this is someone who would have been all….through…the hospital. When I think of how many places per shift I can travel at the hospital I work at….the cafeteria….gift shop…..stairwells and hallways and corridors….if I am out and about on my breaks, I possibly come into contact with 50-100 people, plenty of whom are immuno-compromised in some form. And I am not a front line patient care worker at all.

I won’t be surprised when they announce that there is another worker sick with H1N1, its just not feasible to contain it to these 4 people. I just wonder how large the numbers are going to get. The medical officer is hasty to reassure us though:

“This doesn’t mean there is ongoing transmission of H1N1 (at the Children’s Hospital),” said Dr. Richard Musto, medical officer of health for the Calgary area.

“It appears these people were all exposed to the virus at the same time.”
