EWG: The Dirty Dozen Veggies & Fruit

I had actually never heard of these referred to as the “dirty dozen”, but EWG (Environmental Working Group) has listed the 2009 top 12 foods that contain the highest amounts of pesticide residue on them, and of course these are coming from conventional, non-organic food chains. Its a good list for quick reference, and of course, have that catchy nickname helps for memory as well. I already knew apples were one of the worst and thankfully PC Organics has great priced apples, but peaches have more more difficult to find organic.

For a printable cheat sheet PDF courtesy of EWG to take with you shopping click here. There’s also an IPhone app! Love it!

The worst offenders are:

  • Peach
  • Apple
  • Sweet Bell Pepper
  • Celery
  • Nectarine
  • Strawberries
  • Cherries
  • Kale
  • Lettuce
  • Grapes-imported
  • Carrot
  • Pear

Thanks so much for spreading the word about our Shopper’s Guide, it’s great to see it here! You might also check out out For Parents page: http://www.ewg.org/forparents – there are lots of resources for parents there on environmental health issues. Cheers, Lisa Frack, EWG Online Organizer
