Children’s Book Review: Three Little Gators

If you ask me to choose between the Three Little Pigs and this remake of the classic tale, I will choose this one hands down. It is hilarious, with the wolf being Big Bottom Boar instead, who with a “bump bump bump” of his rump, tries to knock over the little gators houses so he can have a snack. Initially my daughter was scared, but when it was revealed that the boar only burns stripes onto his big bottom from the little gators BBQ grill, she thinks its the funniest thing ever!

The illustrations are amazing, I love them, the colors dark and evoke that swamp-like feeling you need, yet still bright enough to capture the kids attention.

Reading level: ages 4-8

Page Count: 32 pages

Publisher: Albert Whitman & Company; 1 edition (Mar 9 2009)

What to expect: slightly scary illustrations for younger sensitive kids, big bottom boar wants to eat the little gators, my daughter initially was scared of the picture of the boar coming down the chimney into a fireplace, she thought he was getting burned up.

Publisher’s synopsis: Three little gators strike out on their own in an east Texas swamp. Their mother warns them to build strong houses that can protect them from Big-bottomed Boar, who likes to eat tasty, tender gators for his snack. Soon, First Gator builds himself a nice house out of rocks. Second Gator reckons rocks are too much work, so he builds his house with sticks. And Third Gator_s house of sand is the easiest one to build!

But soon Big-bottomed Boar shows up. With a bump, bump, bump of the fierce boar_s rump, he knocks over Third Gator_s house of sand. It doesn_t take long for that rump to bump Second Gator_s house of sticks. But he can_t knock over Third Gator_s house of stones, so he tries another way in_through the chimney! Guess what happens to the Boar_s rump after that?!

I love take off stories, or stories told by the other side (the wolf's version) they really encourage children to branch out an be more creative. Will definitely take a look at this book.
