Children’s Book Review: Sonder the Snow Snake

Sonder the Snow Snake might be just the book to banish some of the blues we have over the fact that that winter is coming. A unique little fella, he just happens to be a snake that’s covered in white fur and licks icicles instead of sunning himself on a hot rock somewhere.

The first thing that will grab your attention is the beautiful artwork done of Sonder and his warm fuzzy fur, making you want to reach out and touch him, just to make sure he feels as soft and cuddly as he looks. Yes, I just said that about a snake.

The story of Sonder is really one that conveys the message of persistence and determination to children and adults alike reading the book. Sonder is like a typical child, trying activities one or two times, then simply giving up when he doesn’t succeed at them fully. But just like kids, having a guiding adult in your life to help you persist can be a welcome and needed helping hand. Sondor is a lucky snow snake and has his Grandslither to help him out.

The underlying moral message doesn’t stop children from enjoying the book in the slightest, it’s woven into the story so seamlessly that it’s hard to pick it out, unless you happen to be the adult reading the book to them.  My children loved the concept of a snow snake and I forsee many hours of my daughter slithering around the house pretending to be Sondor.

A really unique and fresh read, Sondor should be tucked into many a stocking come this Christmas!

The author, Annie B. Fox is an illustrator, painter, writer, graphic designer and has taught skiing to children and adults. She is also a Colorado native, wife, and mother of two and resides in Boulder, Colorado. Five percent of the sales will go to educate school children about the science of climate change and how they can make a difference.  Visit the website www.savethesnowsnakes.org  to find out more about this project that’s close to the author’s heart.
