Children’s Book Review: Mama’s Milk

What a beautiful book. The subject is beautiful, the pictures are beautiful and the story is beautiful. Have I said beautiful enough? I doubt it. This book is all about nursing babies, human and animal alike. It starts with a human mama nursing her baby in bed, next is farm animals, and then on to wild animals. The story is written as a lovely, soft poem that winds though the pages and shows us all the places that baby animals can nurse with their Mama.  The back of the book has interesting little facts about each animal, such as kangaroo milk is pink, and that mama bats roost together to nurse. I would highly recommend this book as a gift for any breastfeeding mama or mama-to-be. I also think this is a fantastic way to introduce your elder child(ren) to how your new baby is going to be fed, as well as a good introduction to learning about mammals for the preschool years.

I get all weepy and miss breastfeeding my babies just reading this book. My daughter, who was especially fond of her “mimi’s”, loves this book. I actually tear up when she sits and reads it and exclaims over all the babies having “mimi’s” Sheesh, I am going to cry just writing this review.

About the Author:From Michael Elsohn Ross’ website: My wife, and I live on a bluff overlooking the Merced River. During spring runoff the river roars and in the summer there are placid pools perfect for swimming. The town we live in is El Portal and right next to Yosemite National Park. There’s a small school here with only three teachers. The kids at the school help me a lot with my books and you can see pictures of some of them in my Backyard Buddies Series

Besides being a writer I also work here as a naturalist taking visitors on hikes and walks to learn about the Park. I’ve been doing it for more than 30 years and plan on doing it for at least another twenty.

Most of my book ideas come from my work as a naturalist or my adventures with school kids. When I’m not taking people on hikes, I’m either writing or taking myself on a hike. I usually don’t write for more than five hours a day. That’s plenty!
