Children’s Book Review: Little Chick

I really enjoyed this book for the simple fact that Little Chick and Old-Auntie have a beautiful  relationship in the story. Old-Auntie is very supportive and loving towards Little Chick, and the stories are simple and beautiful.  My son enjoyed that there are 3 short stories within the one book, all about Little Chick and Old-Auntie and their escapades.

The book is beautifully illustrated in warm and earthy colors, lending a warm, fuzzy feel to the story.

Reading level: Ages 4-8

Page Count: 56 pages

Publisher: Candlewick (February 24, 2009)

What to expect: a strong relationship between Little Chick and Old-Auntie demonstrating support, caring and love. Messages of persistence and patience are also portrayed.

Publisher’s synopsis: Little Chick may be a good and patient gardener, as Old-Auntie observes, but what if you simply can’t wait for your carrot to grow tall? What if you skip like a pro but still can’t lift your kite in the air? Or if you’re a really good stretcher but can’t reach your favorite star? With affection and humor, Amy Hest offers three vignettes about a curious chick and a loving auntie who knows how to soften disappointments by keeping the spark of wonder alive. And the incomparable Anita Jeram renders Little Chick’s gestures and movements with a mastery that captures the spirit of every young child. The creators of the New York Times bestselling KISS GOOD NIGHT offer a trio of gentle tales about a special intergenerational bond.

About the Author: Amy Hest likes to walk. She walks along the streets of her Upper West Side neighborhood in New York City, sometimes alone and sometimes with her husband, Lon. She walks her daughter’s puppy in Central Park. She walks home from her son’s apartment in Tribeca. She walks north along the Hudson River and Riverside Drive, where her grandparents
once lived. She walks to the bagel store, where they put aside burnt onion bagels for her each day.
