Children’s Book Review: If You Were a Penguin
September 23, 2009 by Karlynn Johnston
This was a fun frolic through the life of a penguin, done in way that you sneakily learn things about penguins along the way. You romp through water and snow, land and water, you wear fancy feathers and toboggan..woohoo!
The illustrations are done by Wendell Minor, “who is a traditionalist and a romantic. He has had a romance with America since his childhood in Aurora, Illinois, and as he explores more regions more closely, his love of the country grows with a vision that celebrates the beautiful, the lyrical.” And his illustrations in this book are colorful and fun.
After the romping around as a penguin is done, you can learn about penguins even further with the penguin fun facts that concludes the book.

Publisher’s synopsis:
If you were a penguin . . .
You could swim really fast and toboggan on ice.
Sing a happy duet, once or twice.
You could live on land but dive under the sea.
There’s a lot penguins can do, just like you and me!
Wendell and Florence Minor create a charming tribute to all the playful fun and activity that comes with being a penguin—which young readers can delight in too!
