Children’s Book Review: I Can Eat A Rainbow

I Can Eat a Rainbow is a colorful and fun introduction to the world of fruits and veggies, presented in a sturdy, visually appealing board book style. The bright pictures of fruits and vegetables surrounding the outside of the book  are sure to quickly garner attention from kids; it turns what is usually a square book into one with bumpy,zig-zag edges that make it unique. This book is perfect for children who are at the age where they are now venturing past pureed food that all looks the same, and are getting into literal hands-on leaning how to eat fruit and veggies.

The text and photos meant for children is preceded by a two page introduction for parents, with helpful and handy tricks, tips and activities to try when introducing new foods to your child. It also lists important information for parents about children needing 5 servings a day of fruits and veggies and how to get the most out of this book.

Once you are past the introduction, the pages are coded by 6 colors, starting with red. Little rhymes and ditty’s on each page make it an incredibly interesting read for children, and the wonderful photo of at least one “animal” creation out of fruits and veggies is sure to thrill. The red page, for example, has a red rabbit made out of apples, strawberries, bean eyes plus raspberries and is snacking on a radish! Exquisitely adorable!

With growing emphasis on our children needing (and sometimes not getting) their daily requirement of fruits and vegetables, this book is an excellent introductory start for toddlers, right from the get-go. And if you are brave enough to try and mimic the built-from-fruit animals yourself, I predict some very thrilled kids in your household!
