humberto Childrens Book Review: Humberto, the Bookworn Hamster

I do believe that I have my own, personal little Bookworm Hamster occupying a room in my house. He’s not as small, nor as furry, but both little bookworms have their nose stuck in a book perpetually. Unlike Humberto though, my son does get outside to play with his friends and family. Humberto, on the other hand, quite happily spends the day reading.

Humberto reads books all day long, while he does everything from eating to brushing his teeth. And since books are his only friends, he has more books than one can imagine! Humberto has a vivid imagination thanks to all his reading, and while running on his wheel,as hamsters are wont to do, he imagines himself in his books, having adventures slaying dragons and exploring outer space.

The other forest animals are friendly and always asking him to play with them, but he declares that he is too busy reading to play. Unfortunately as well, he also turns down a friendship request from the beaver, saying that he is too busy trying to read all the good books out there to have any time for friendship.

A surprising turn of events has Humberto changing his mind and opening his heart to his fellow woodland creatures, finding a new happiness that is found outside of books.

The themes of not only the pleasure that reading can be, but compassion, friendship and kindness make this book a lovely little read to share with your children. The illustrations are bright and peppy, and children will completely love the woodland world that is created in the book.

Mayra's picture books are great, but "Humberto the Bookworm" is my favorite. "The Magic Violin is my next favorite. Both books share important lessons.
