Funny, zippy and sharp, Granny Torrelli Makes Soup by Sharon Creech, is enjoyable for young readers and older alike. By the middle of the book, I wanted to invite Granny Torrelli to my own home to make her soup and soothe my heart with her funny, wise advice. I gave this book a 7 because I wanted to stay in the Torrelli kitchen, listen with the aromas wafting around me, and find out what happened in each of their stories. — especially with Rosie and that Bailey boy!
Most unique about this little treasure is the way the very length and rhythm of the chapters contribute to 12yr old Rosie’s voice. In the first chapter, covering all of one paragraph, we’re not sure just how old Rosie is. We only know she is having a fit of some sort – upset at someone called Bailey. As she works her way through her feelings, the bite-sized chapters begin to grow as her maturity and character begins to rise to the occasion. That Bailey, you see, has always been her best friend and now possibly …more?
By the time Granny has finished her first dish and is moving on to the next, we are well enamored of this family and their great stories of courageous young hearts.
