piggy 218x300 Childrens Book Review: Are You Ready To Play Outside?

Another gem written by our family favorite, Mo Willems from the Elephant and Piggie line of books. Can this man do any wrong? We think not. My 3 year old daughter is enraptured with this book, to the point that she now has it memorized. She has never had a strong enough interest in one specific book to memorize what words go with certain pages in a book, however this one she can now sit and “read” to us word for word, page to page. Piggy is hilariously tempermental and funny, but always appreciative of his best friend Gerald.

We will definitely be reviewing more from this line of early reader books and encouraging my daughters deep love of Piggy!

Reading level: infant and up

Page Count: 64 pages

Publisher: Hyperion (Nov 4 2008)

What to expect: a simple story that will captivate a small child’s imagination

Publisher’s synopsis: Winning unanimous rave reviews, Mo Willems’ Elephant and Piggie series continues to charm readers. Featuring two lovable and funny characters, an optimistic (and sometimes reckless) pig and a cautious, pessimistic elephant, these books make reading irresistible to the beginning readers. Children who sat on their parents’ laps to have Pigeon read to them will eagerly take the plunge with these books to start reading on their own.

Each book has been vetted by an early learning specialist (and many adorable early learners).

In Are You Ready to Play Outside?, Piggie can’t wait to go play in the sunshine. But will a rainy day ruin all the fun?

About the Author: Mo Willems, a number one New York Times best-selling author and illustrator, has been awarded a Caldecott Honor on three occasions (for Don’t Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus!, Knuffle Bunny: A Cautionary Tale, and Knuffle Bunny Too: A Case of Mistaken Identity). Other favorites include Naked Mole Rat Gets Dressed and Leonardo, the Terrible Monster. Mo began his career on Sesame Street, where he garnered six Emmy Awards.
