Child-Sized Weights For A Child Sized Workout

When I see phrases like “improves sports performance” in an article about children and their workout regimens, I shudder. A lot. I’m sorry, I can’t help it. Even though this article does raise a good point about preventing  sports injuries due to so much stress on young joints and bones, the thought of children working out on child sized machines creeps me out.

I don’t think so much that an 11 or 12 year old is such a big deal; but the article states that a child as young as 8 can safely participate in the program. Eight is so young to be hooked up to a machine, working out to condition your muscles to prevent injury and of course, to excel in your sport of choice. And maybe my feelings are out of whack with the general sports-parents population; I have no kids in sports, I can’t forsee myself thinking that their sports performance is critical to their lives even if they DO participate in one, but hey, things change.

I can see myself encouraging my child at an age older than 8 to condition their muscles if they are in a high injury sport, teens are completely capable of working out and learning proper techniques that will take them into that adult world of gyms and memberships. But there’s just this feeling that at 8, it seems to be robbing a child of their innocence, that they shouldn’t be playing so hardcore in ANY sport at the tender age of 8, that sports should still be fun at that age, they shouldn’t be working out to improve their performance, but just playing and being a kid between games.

Not hitting the gym.
