This is a valuable resource for parents like myself; I dread the day my children reach advanced levels of mathematics and require my help with homework.
I don’t like math. There, I said it.
Yes, I keep my thoughts to myself and don’t prejudice my kids with thoughts of how horrible math is. But truly, math and I have never had what you would call an amiable relationship.
Except trig. For some reason my mind and trigonometry are melded into one large triangle. My high school math teachers never understood how I could get 100% on trig exams yet barely pass algebra. Algebra makes me whimper with fear.
So a book like this is what I need. Oh my goodness, yes.
The basics are covered in the areas as follows:
- Numbers
- Geometry
- Trigonometry
- Algebra
- Statistics
- Probability
The foreword reminds us that math homework can be the cause of stress in many households and that the skills you learned early in school are still relevant later in life. A refresher in math for us parents is an excellent thing, and this book serves that purpose well.
It also mentions that many people weren’t taught math well or in an interesting way. I think as parents that reminding ourselves and giving ourselves confidence in our math abilities again gives us a solid base to help our children learn in better ways.
Once we ourselves hone our abilities a bit more, then we can create fun activities to help our children learn, rather than worksheets, which has a lasting impression on kids. Using food or candies, games or riddles, all of these are fun and creative ways to learn math.
I give this a thumbs up for a great refresher book!
